Emoji is the fastest growing language in the world. These days we text each other more often than we have face-to-face contact. Emoji seems to be a widely used tool to prevent misunderstandings in text-based communication. With the project Tears of Joy I’m researching the potential of Emoji; Is our script changing? And what are psychological consequences of expressing via icons instead of searching for words?

How do Western people interpret the Kadomatsu emoji (Japanese New Years decoration)? For this series, I used the most diverse answers from my online emoji survey, and made my own visual interpretation.
